In this episode we look at the debate between the Federal Liberal government and grocers like Sobey’s, Loblaw, Metro, Costco and Walmart regarding the implementation of a Grocer Code of Conduct agreement.

Also, we’ll be the new TD Economics report that shows how Canadians who have renewed their mortgages are spending less, and we’ll briefly cover the fine that Fintrac has issued to TD Bank.

    1. Mark, if you believe that the food market in Canada operates as a free market, you’re mistaken. The government has you misled. Take a close look at the myriad Agricultural Marketing Boards in Canada and the extensive federal and provincial regulations in place. Attempt to grow a batch of chickens and sell them or keep a few layers and sell the surplus eggs. When was the last time you purchased a homemade pie from a local resident, or even at a fair? What about buying homemade canned pears? Whatever happened to backyard gardens and small suppliers?

I often hear the argument that these regulations are for our safety, but I ask you, is consuming a pie from a neighbor really less safe than one from chain stores? Think about it.

  3. I renew my mortgage in 2026…I added $200/month to my payments this year, hope to add more next year…

  4. If the government wants to lower food prices, which they don’t truly want to do they would open their own grocery chains but that will never happen.

  5. My opinion. The farmer, packager, trucker, etc all have tax / cost increases, and then the grocery stores needs to keep a profit as well to stay afloat.

If this disgusting government would stop taxing so damn much, the groceries would go down.

  6. If they want to get the price of everything down, including groceries, implement policy to get the price of diesel down from $1.90 per litre!!!!

  7. The 2008 Financial crisis in the USA was a problem with subprime borrowers. Not the problem in Canada today and is why the market is moving up.

  8. Marc you said you handled money for a lot of seniors. Could you let me know what you think of Corbridge Financial the AIG spin off ? Thanks.

  9. Thanks for another great video.

I absolutely think the government needs to do something about food prices. These massive price increases in such a short time are not normal. When a market (or an individual for that matter) starts doing things it never did before, it could be an indication that something is broken. At the very least I think there should be an investigation, maybe even a royal commission investigating the entire food system with the aim of discovering what has gone awry. They should look into everyone: producers, middlemen, importers, grocers… Then we could get a realistic picture of how much of it is because of increases in things like energy prices and how much of it is companies raising prices because they know they can blame it on inflation. I wouldn’t just pass a grocer’s code of conduct law and consider the job done.

“Average” Canadians are under more financial strain right now then at any other point in my lifetime. The majority of that strain comes from mortgages and rent, but the increasing price of inputs like food and fuel just makes things harder for everyone. Lowering interest rates might help in the short term, but I think lowering them too far would just repeat the conditions that led to the problem in the first place. Housing prices will come down eventually, but the question is how fast and how controlled that decline will be. Is all of this leading to some sort of collapse like a recession? I don’t see how we can avoid it if the cost of living rises beyond most people’s ability to pay.

  10. Considering the bread price fixing that went on, I am happy that government is paying attention to our bigger grocery chains

  11. Interesting how Sobey’s likes the government rules. However Sobey’s prices are way more than Superstore or Costco.

Also if the government was really worried about inflation, start with your own spending first.

    IE: Balanced budget

    1. I feel that shopping at Sobey’s gets my Gastronomic flowing … shopping at superstore makes me want to hunker down and save money.

  12. The only way to reduce prices is with competition and technology and less taxation.

Unfortunately we have none of that in canada and its getting worse every year.

  13. Some countries have MRP. Maximum Retail Price. Eg- A packet of Lays would cost the same at any supermarket which is not the case here. The MRP has always been quite affordable. Why can’t we have that in Canada?

  14. 4$ per week is all I spent to buy 10-15 different types of veggies fresh right from the local farmers crops. You guessed it right the country is Hindustan aka India. Why don’t you guys let ships with veggies be imported so that 7 million Canadians can eat and have a meal on their tables, this is corporate culture being the most atrocious 😢😢
