Can Elon Musk separate his function as referee and player at Twitter? Does he need to in order to create a fair place for those who disagree with his views?

These appeals for Elon to be an impartial “umpire” are a waste of breath. Why not focus on your constructive product ideas for Twitter instead?
Very good analysis and suggestions Dave. As usual I sincerely appreciate the deeper thinking and thoughtful approach to your work! Thank you.
And specifically, I think it was good to call out that the “break and fix” approach is not suited for social sciences. Once trust is broken, it can sometimes never be recovered.
Yes, but we are far from there. Most people don’t care about the drama, and will forget it as soon as the media drops the topic.
What really matters is making Twitter awesome, then people will use it, love it, and advertise it to their friends and families. Tesla faced a lot of public perception headwind, and still succeeded with this model.
Of course, it would have been better if Elon didn’t take sides, but he’s still just a human, who makes mistakes.
Yeah, like my trust in David Lee being broken by discovering he is an authoritarian scum.
Lets hope he hears Daves quiet but wise words. Pride comes before the fall, it will be interesting to see if hes trusted his own voice too much
How do we ‘trust’ Twitter now that Elon is pulling the strings? How did those ‘trust’ Twitter with the previous management?
It’s easier to trust someone when they’re obviously biased and do what you want them to do. When you get used to that, you’ll never trust anyone who is neutral or close to it.
The way Elon is using his power I don’t know if I want to go to mars with him
Yes, but you can’t have one Twitter constitution. In every country where there’s access to Twitter, Twitter needs to obey the laws of that country.
Excellent message. Hope he watches. Daily personal political opinions and suspensions from twitter’s spokesman and chief rulemaker is driving away anyone with a different viewpoint. I joined Twitter just for him, and love everything he’s doing for humanity (mostly!), but I have been tempted to quit twitter specifically because of Elon’s tweeting. I guess I expected him to be smarter in this, but we can’t all be geniuses in every aspect of life.
I really hope Elon sees this and considers the points you have made. Very insightful and well presented, you have managed to summarize this tumultuous time exceptionally well.
“when the donkey is feeling too well, he goes onto the ice” and buys Twitter and acts as a short seller and destroyes Tesla.
How do you propose fixing corruption?
Do you see his concern for truth?
Or don’t you place much value on it?
Reasonable plan, Dave. Chances something similar WILL be adopted and followed? Remains to be seen. BUT – the future looks hopeful. However, Elon’s decision tree is much more complex in its workings than we can make out from the results. Elon has suffered deep physical and emotional incursions during his life. Some he’s shared, others are still kept close enough to remain influential. We all suffer – it is our reaction to these pains and struggles that makes us who we are. I wish a calmer future for Elon – but it is still difficult watching my hero undergo such sufferings.
yea let’s make Twitter like the American political system that works so good.
The referee analogy is appropriate, given that he’s now exposed himself as a fan of soccer, and that’s one of the most corrupt pseudo-sports on the planet. The average soccer ref continually ignores fouls, which are pretty easy to deal with in soccer, as opposed to a rugby ref who would penalise players. So yeah, he’s behaving as a ref, but not of a more honourable game like cricket or rugby but of the type that wears it’s bad decision on it’s sleeve. I mean, I suppose because they’re not allowed to wear good decisions like, ‘Gay people are not bad’ on their sleeves due to all the corruption in FIFA and the national football associations.
He needs to not be the referee, I totally agree. He should concentrate on the tech. Every time I hear a tech thing, or a comment about how Twitter should be able to afford decent food for staff just as long as they’re in the office and use it or something practical, he’s pretty good. Twitter is a cesspool and always has been, and the reason you didn’t see Dorsey getting this flack is because he kept his head down. If you think about it, so do most of the others.
The last time I saw Zuckerburg saying anything, it was something like, ‘Congressman, we sell advertising.’ which was a pretty impressive response given the enormous stroke he was presumably having trying to pass the epic level of stupidity you’d have to have to ask that question. :
Thanks Dave. Well put, but I fear you’ll be put into Elon’s doghouse soon enough for voicing this out. He ‘s shown he doesn’t take well to criticism and feedback.
Excellent and, unfortunately, necessary episode. Thank you, hopefully Elon will ponder on this
Dave, this is spot on 👍
You would have the right personality and insighs into human psychology to lead moderation policy at Twitter imho.
Great analogy, thanks Dave Lee.
Agree 100%. The problem is the ego of Elon musk. All these years people help him build to this size.
The way he says twitter= free speech makes no sense. He hasn’t proved it yet playing the referee and the player
Rather than just a Twiter constitution, how about a fair and unbiased constitution that all social media companies will abide by.
